The Red Sea

The Red Sea Geography

  • usually considered an extension of the Indian Ocean, which lies between Africa and Asia.
  • narrow connection to the Indian Ocean lies at its south through the Bab al Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden.
  • 1,200 miles long and as much as190 miles wide at some points
  • maximum depth of 8,200 feet
  • surface area 174,000 square miles

Red Sea Wildlife

  • unusually rich with over 1,000 invertebrate species
  • over 200 soft and hard corals
  • many valuable finfish, such as groupers, jacks, cobia
  • valuable crustaceans including several varieties of shrimp (p. monodon, p. semisulcatus, p. japonicus)

Red Sea Ecology

  •  most northern tropical sea
  •  exceptionally saline body of water with salinity 36.5-41ppt S to N
  •  surface water temperatures remain relatively constant at 70-77°F (21- 25°C
  • temperature and visibility remain good to around 660 feet (200 m)
  • known for its strong winds and tricky local currents
  • coastline is primarily salt flats, known locally as subkha, rock, and sand

Red Sea Formation

  • created by the division of Africa from the Arabian Peninsula, around 30 million years ago.
  • sea still widening small volcanic features in the deeper parts
  • suggested that the sea will become an ocean in time
